  • About 10 miles (16 km) out of the city, but still within the Krakow metropolitan area, lies the city of Wieliczka, home to the renowned Salt Mine, considered to be the epitome of technological progress made by humans.Once a salt mine (until the early 1990’s, when the mine flooded), it was one of the largest business ventures in Europe a few centuries ago. During the 16th century, royal guests began visiting the mine lured by the developing culture and health benefits. Over the years, miners transformed the mine from a typical dark cave into a majestic location. By the 19th century, giant salt-crystal chandeliers lit the underground complex, they’re still today.   • Established in 1940 by Nazi Germany, in abandoned Polish army barracks, Auschwitz was the largest concentration camp and extermination center. Out of the 1.3 million people which the SS and police deported, there were over 1.1 million men, women and children who lost their lives in this horrifying place.This infamous concentration camp operated from May 1940 in the suburbs of Oswiecim (Auschwitz in German) until January 1945, when it was liberated by the 1st Ukranian Front of the Soviet Union’s Red Army. The tall barbed wire fences surrounding the block cells which were intended to house the suffering prisoners. The watchtowers and the wooden barracks, along with the gallows and gas chambers show the terrifying image and demonstrate the enormous scale and depravity of Nazi Germany.   • The charming city of Zakopane, located at the foot of the Tatra mountains, is visited all year long by many Polish and International tourists.Founded in the 16th century on seasonal shepherd settlements it has evolved into an impressive city through the years. Iddylic views of the mountains, ever so close to nature, unique architectural style, lots of hiking tracks and ski slopes – all of which make Zakopane the most popular destination if you’re looking for a place to relax and escape from buzz of the city.On the route to Zakopane we’ll stop in Chochołów – the wooden village. People still live there in the original wooden houses built by the Polish highlanders, which are under the patronage of UNESCO. You will get a chance to go inside one of them to experience how people used to live. After that we will visit a Bacowka (traditional shepherd’s hut) where you will have a chance to try famous regional cheese – Oscypek and see how it is prepared.
